The impact of nutrient deficiency and lost connections on fertility
Oct 23, 2026
Naomi introduced fertility expert Angela to the Embrace Fertility podcast. Angela, a nutritionist with 16 years of experience in fertility and pregnancy, discussed the impact nutrient deficiency and lost connections on fertility.
Angela emphasised the importance of close-knit communities, where family members and neighbours know and support each other, as crucial for good health. Angela pointed out that modern lifestyles, with people living further apart and relying more on social media for information, have led to a loss of these connections and a shift towards relying on unknown sources for advice.
Naomi agreed, highlighting that this could lead to the spread of misinformation and lifestyle choices that aren't optimal for individual health. Both stressed the importance of traditional knowledge passed down through families and communities.
Seasonal Nutrition and Fertility Support
Angela discussed the importance of seasonality and traditional nutrition in supporting fertility and overall health. She explained that the body has an inherent connection to the seasons, and eating foods that are in season can improve taste, nutrient content, and support the body's natural functions.
Naomi asked about the baseline steps someone could take to improve their nutrition for fertility, and Angela suggested starting with incorporating healthy proteins and a variety of vegetables into their diet. She emphasised that this knowledge has been lost due to modern lifestyles and the prevalence of processed foods.
Balanced Diet and Cultural Food Identity
Angela and Naomi discussed the importance of a balanced and healthy diet, with a focus on the role of food in one's cultural identity and its impact on overall health. Angela emphasised that food should be seen as more than just a means of fuel, but as a way to nourish the body, support fertility, and bring people together. She criticised the modern tendency towards convenience and the negative effects this has on our relationship with food, such as eating in front of screens and not fully appreciating the nutritional value of our meals. Naomi contributed her own experiences trying to eat healthily while navigating food intolerances, and the challenges of maintaining a balanced diet amidst a busy lifestyle.
Seasonal Foods and Nutrition Journey
Angela explained the benefits of consuming seasonal foods, how they provide the body with necessary nutrients and signal changes according to the time of year. Naomi agreed, noting the difference in taste and nutrient content of fruits, such as strawberries, when consumed seasonally.
Naomi then discussed her personal journey towards better nutrition and the challenges she faced in replacing removed food items.
Angela's Holistic Health Assessment Approach
Angela detailed her comprehensive approach to assessing and addressing health issues. She explained that she begins by conducting a blood test, health questionnaire, and food diary to understand a client's nutritional status, family health predispositions, and eating habits. She talked about the importance of a personalised approach, tailoring her approach based on the client's specific needs and potential issues.
Angela also mentioned that she could go further up the chain to investigate issues such as the reproductive microbiome for issues related to fertility.
Lifetime Health and Nutritional Therapy
Naomi and Angela discussed the importance of investing in lifetime health and the health of future generations. The role of nutrition in improving fertility and overall health. Angela stressed that a nutritional therapist can help individuals understand the connection between their lifestyle habits and their health issues. She shared success stories of how improving nutrition and lifestyle habits benefited not just the individuals but also their families.
